Staphylococcus was first recognized as a human pathogen in 1880 and was named for its grape cluster-like appearance. In 1884, Staphylococcus aureus was identified and named for its vibrant golden color, which was later found to be the result of golden toxin production. Here, experts examine in-depth patterns of S. aureus colonization and exposures in humans, mammals, and birds that have led to the development of various clinical diseases. The mode of transmission of S. aureus and different methods for its detection in different samples are defined. Conventional antibiotic options to treat this aggressive, multifaceted, and readily adaptable pathogen are becoming limited. Alternative, novel chemotherapeutics to target S. aureus are discussed in the pages within, including herbal medicines, bee products, and modes of delivery.

Eras in Epidemiology PDF

At its core, epidemiology is concerned with changes in health and disease. The discipline requires counts and measures: of births, health disorders, and deaths, and in order to make sense of these counts it requires a population base defined by place and time. Epidemiology relies on closely defined concepts of cause - experimental or observational - of the physical or social environment, or in the laboratory. Epidemiologists are guided by these concepts, and have often contributed to their development. Because the disciplinary focus is on health and disease in populations, epidemiology has always been an integral driver of public health, the vehicle that societies have evolved to combat and contain the scourges of mass diseases. In this book, the authors trace the evolution of epidemiological ideas from earliest times to the present. Beginning with the early concepts of magic and the humors of Hippocrates, it moves forward through the dawn of observational methods, the systematic counts of deaths initiated in 16th-century London by John Graunt and William Petty, the late 18th-century Enlightenment and the French Revolution, which established the philosophical argument for health as a human right, the national public health system begun in 19th-century Britain, up to the development of eco-epidemiology, which attempts to re-integrate the fragmented fields as they currently exist. By examining the evolution of epidemiology as it follows the evolution of human societies, this book provides insight into our shared intellectual history and shows a way forward for future study.

Stroke Care PDF

Stroke is common, complicated to manage, and, until recently, remarkably neglected. Over the past 30 years, good evidence has emerged that thorough and organised care from teams of health professionals on stroke units leads to substantially fewer deaths and better recovery than other types of care. In fact, stroke medicine is emerging as a separate specialty for health professionals, creating a need for learning and training materials specifically designed tocapture and pass on this expertise. Aimed at all the members of the stroke team, including doctors, nurses, stroke co-ordinators, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapy members, this new edition provides a holistic approach to the care of patientswith transient ischemic attacks (TIA) and stroke. It covers the wide range of knowledge and skills needed to tackle problems that may lead up to, or follow on from a stroke, and follows the course of a patient's 'journey' from diagnosis to life at home, incorporating recent changes in the field of stroke medicine, including the latest clinical trials. It also covers the basic principles of rehabilitation, as well as secondary prevention, discharge planning, specific interventions, prognosis forvarious neurological deficits, and includes a new chapter on longer terms problems, including spasticity and psychiatric complications.
